Following his running mate's ratings-bustin' appearance on Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago, John McCain did the "Live from New York" thing...
First, there was the cold open with Tina Fey, where McCain and Palin countered Obama's TV Special with their own QVC show. Surprise appearance by Cindy McCain, looking totally in her element on a QVC-like set hawking jewelry.
Then McCain followed Palin's lead and returned for a spot on "Weekend Update" - which paled in comparison to Amy Poehler's Palin rap, and frankly seemed a little desperate... but I did like all the maverick references
McCain stuck around to the end of the show, waving with Cindy, Tina, David Cook and friends during the goodbye. I love the end of SNL for the same reason I love the Golden Globe awards -- best candidly awkward moments among celebrities. This closing credits began with McCain asking Tina Fey to replace Sarah Palin on the election trail, McCain shaking hands with David Cook, Tina Fey standing awkwardly with Cindy McCain until Ben Affleck rescued her, and McCain giving Kristen Wiig a big bear hug with the back of his head to camera a la the Town Hall debate. A fine closing credits indeed.
PS -- Amy Poehler, please come back for Monday night's pre-election day special!!!
